The AVID Ascend featuring H- or V-speed rated sizes is Yokohama’s first mass-produced Grand Touring All-Season tire line in the United States using Yokohama’s Orange Oil technology and branded with their BluEarth eco-friendly identification. Developed for the drivers of coupes, sedans, minivans and crossover vehicles, the AVID Ascend is designed to blend long treadwear, low rolling resistance and all-season traction, even in light snow.
Yokohama BluEarth branding is used to identify an ecologically friendly series of tires that are designed to deliver environmentally, human and socially friendly solutions for drivers and their vehicles.
Orange Oil technology uses oil extracted from renewable orange peels to improve the molecular bond between natural and synthetic rubber to enhance tire treadlife, vehicle fuel efficiency and traction in all seasons.
The AVID Ascend features a mildly asymmetric tread design consisting of three ride zones that focus on dry grip, water evacuation and wintertime traction. Large outboard shoulder blocks are connected by tread block bridges to maintain tire contact with the road that helps enhance dry response and cornering stability. The continuous center rib provides constant rubber-to-road contact to enhance straight-line tracking while its tapered outboard edge promotes more-even wear. Cross grooves and four circumferential grooves help evacuate water from under the tread to resist hydroplaning resistance and promote wet traction. Yokohama’s 3D Adaptive Sipes provide more tread block rigidity for longer wear, while their biting edges increase wet and wintertime traction. Inboard tread blocks feature higher density 3D Adaptive Sipes to provide additional biting edges that increase winter traction in light snow.

After 30,000 miles, my feel about these tires is that they are a solid choice for an “upper mid-level” tire. If you don’t need or want”top of the line”, these are a great value. You’ll get about 85-90% of the performance for 70% of the price of the usual top of line tires. I rotate every 5k miles and these seem to be wearing well, if perhaps just a little bit faster than I’d like to see.
I been using these tires for many years. I needed two more, so i purchased two new ones a couple months ago. The tread was slightly different. They handled the same as the older ones, but the noise is terrible. So Loud! tones change dependent on speed.
I put 130,000 miles on 2 sets of the OEM Dunlops. I purchased these tires Yokohamas based on positive reviews and the promise of good fuel economy. I regretted it from the day I left the tire store. The responsive steering response and predictable handling of the OEM tires is gone. These tires feel squishy and unstable, like the sidewalls are flimsy. I have experimented with different pressures with no results. These tires handle very poorly. I constantly find myself making mid-corner steering corrections, something I never had to do on the Dunlops. The dry grip is far less than the OEM tires, something I expected with these low-rolling resistance tires. Hard cornering brings tire scrub and chatter. Wet grip is even worse. The tires hydroplane, chatter, and sap all confidence. I find myself driving less than the speed limit any time the road is wet. Grip in the snow was not bad when the tires were brand new, but by the time they were 25% worn, I found that they spent a lot of time spinning and sliding. These tires did not deliver on the promise of good fuel economy. I averaged 44.8 mpg over the last 43,000 miles with my Dunlops on my current commute. Over the past 30,000 miles with these Yokahamas, I have averaged only 42.2. The OEM Dunlop tires lasted about 75,000 miles a set on average. These tires feel like they’re completely shot at 30,000. I can’t wait to get them off my car.
Just bought these again for my wifes car. I have between 40 and 50k miles on them and they’re just under half tread life. I drive in a variety of conditions and they’re a very good all around tire. I think they’re exceptionally good in the snow for an all season tire. I’ve had Firestone, Bridgestone,Goodyear, General, Kelly and Kuhmo that I remember and these are by far the longest lasting tread tires ive ever had.
Was very happy with these when i first got them. I had the envigors then went with these after. 15000 miles later they are junk. When i was getting them rotated the tire guy told me they are unsafe to drive on because the tread is separating from the tire. And if i drive the tread could separate from the tire almost like peeling an orange Now yokohama wants me to buy 4 new tires ship the old ones back to see if they can warranty them. Now i see why they are on clearance. Total junk!
With a rating of 740 A A I was expecting at least 70000 miles. After only 4 years of 55000 miles these tires failed state inspection. They were worn out. The tread wear was even on all four tires.I take very good care of my tires. Regular tire rotation every 7500 miles, air pressure checked regularly (30 psi) and an alignment if I notedany unevenness in the tread wear during tire rotations.
I’ve owned my second set of Yokohama Aviid for only 5K after purchasing previously in 2013 and running them from 36K to 100K!! The first set was awesome and quiet! Loved them! So I again based on my great experience purchased another set of 4, had the car 4 wheel aligned as i usually do…and these tires are noisy as he**! Why? i am very disappointed!! I will reach out to he manufacturer but can tire design change Or composition of material etc? There is no reason new tires should be this freaking noisy!!! For my wife to notice, that says it all right there….we own 3 Toyota’s and these tires are just awful….after such a great experience!!!
Replaced Geolanders with these at 60000miles . No problems with the tires. Got them mounted, road force balanced, and 4 wheel aligned @ Hilton Head Honda in Bluffton SC 4 years ago. I drive a lot. They have about 65K miles on them. Still have 7 mm tread left. My mechanic says to replace them before next winter. I told him I’m going to Florida next winter. He told me to replace them when I’m down there. Think I will…. gonna buy the same tires again .
This is a longterm followup review for the Avid Ascends, I purchased in 2014. I have a little over 55,000 miles on them now, and they have gone downhill. First the minuses,,1. Over time I noticed gas mileage actually went down a small bit. Not dramatically, but I noticed. 2. As they wore down, became more of a hard riding tire, noticed that I was feeling road bumps more and more. Shocks, all the way round, are new. Also, tires became cupped, even though regularly rotated.3. Noise level rose exponentially inside. Starting to sound like am riding on off road dirt tires. Very annoying. I commute 45 miles one way to and from work. 4. Braking was confidence inspiring, when first purchased, deteriorated with wear.5. Will not be able to get full benefit of quoted mileage wear out of the tires.Pluses,,,1. Settled the car like a tank in the snowstorms. VERY impressed with traction/grip in the snow and ice. Very little problem handling the weather.2. Wet weather traction was never a problem. Maintained plenty of confidence while maneuvering thru the wet weather.3. Even though wearing out sooner than quoted mileage, still has decent traction, no flat, worn spots.Overall, decent tire for the money. Is a bit pricey, for the money, but performance wise, I was not disappointed terribly. Wished I could have gotten full benefit of the mileage, and the road noise that developed bothered me a bit. For an all season tire, that you can count on in the snow/ice, rain this is not a bad buy. Just dont be surprised that you wont get full benefit of mileage, and be prepared for interior noise to develop as they wear. I wasn’t disappointed by the tires overall; just expected a little more for the hype.
These tires are THE JAM!! I’ve been struggling with two different brands (the OEM tires and then a set from another manufacturer)…after 10,000 miles or so those tires got worse and worse as the miles added up – they wore unevenly (even though alignment was spot on) and the road noise was unbearable. Wet weather traction on my last set of tires was abysmal…I couldn’t accelerate away from a stopped position in the wet without getting massive wheelspin (even when I tried to gently pull away!) These Yokohama Avid Ascend tires are exactly what this vehicle wanted….granted I only have 2500 miles or so on them, but they are already performing better than either of the other sets at this early stage in their life. Quiet, supple, and really solid during directional changes and fantastic in the rain…great performance. Oh did I mention that the price was right on these Yokohamas??
If you can afford these tires you will not go wrong. I was averaging 30.5 MPG (EPA rated for 30mpg) with full Mobil1 Synthetic. I cannot believe that I got 79,435 miles on tires that were rated for 80,000 miles. You read reviews of tires falling short all the time and these did not. I drove in snow that was as deep as my bumper and the tires had no problem! They were installed 10/13/14 and removed 11/17/17. The tires were worn just passed the warn indicator but still delivered adequate traction on dry pavement, and average traction on wet pavement. Thank you Yokohama for making a fantastic tire. I commuted in the car, and delivered pizzas for 2 years with these tires. I also lived near the beach for some time with them. They started to rot a little on the side walls near the end of their life, but I still got almost every mile I could out of them! You will not be disappointed. I would have purchased again if I could have afforded them!!
The OEM Goodyear Eagle LS’s were ok so I replaced them with the same, but the second set were the worst. They could never be balanced properly and had to be replaced before they wore out. The Yokohama Avids were so much better in every way it was like getting a new car. I live in Michigan and drive in all kinds of weather and feel these tires inspire confidence in the rain, wind and snow. They may not be the best you can get but so far they’ve been pretty darn good.
At 42K miles the tread depth are at 6/32 inch. I utilize a 5 tire rotation. Rotating every 5K and keeping the air pressure at 30 psi (32 psi winter). I should get close to 70K out of these tires. In the Kanawha Valley of West Virginia snow isn’t really the enemy; ice is. They do fairly well on slush/ice combined with Subaru’s all-wheel-drive and conservative driving. Proper winter tires, however, are what’s called for during winters here. These tires are very quiet and smooth on bumpy roads. Sometimes I’ll push it on the sharp curves of the clover leafs. They certainly stick better than the OEM Geolander tires.
The tread wear warranty on these tires is magical thinking. I am a highway only driver, 30000 miles later and less than 2 years after I bought them, they are completely worn and I am replacing them. They were properly rotated and non abused. Makes me think that the rubber is absolute crap. Never again Yokohama.
Put Yokahama Avid-Ascends on a 2011 Rogue SV AWD as replacement tires. I found these tires to offer a nice, quiet ride with minimal road noise, and decent performers in dry/rain/snow conditions. Still running after 60,000 miles, but are ready for replacing. Will go with Yokahamas again, either Ascends or Envigors.
I had the Michelin Defender before moving to these tires. The Yokohama were MUCH better in almost every category. I noticed these handle better and are much quieter compared to my old Michelin’s. The Michelin’s did not handle small bumps well and had horrible road manners, they always felt sluggish in the road. I am much more happy with these new tires, even though I replaced only the front, I have noticed a big improvement. Who knew tires made such a big difference. Not only that, these tires were much less expensive compared to the Michelin. I would have saved more had I replaced all four and gotten the rebate but my rear ones still had plenty of tread. Recommended to everyone.
The Yokohama Avid Ascend performs well in dry, wet, and snowy conditions with only ice sometimes posing a challenge. When the tire is brand new, it may exhibit some skittishness in wet conditions, but that disappears after a few hundred miles. It is also a very quiet tire. In fact, on some surfaces it creates nearly no noise at all. The tire’s only negative is its firm ride (this is a H rated tire) which doesn’t insulate the driver as much as I would like from the road’s imperfections. That being said, the Yokohama Avid Ascend is a commendable tire.
The first year these tires were very quiet. After the first year, there is so much tire noise coming from these tires. When I put my snow tires, my car is much quieter than these tires. I would avoid these tires since they get much more noisier over time.
At 65K the tread is between 2/32 and 3/32. After 3 years in WV and Colorado these tires are excellent above freezing temps. They are quiet, smooth and very resposive. Below freezing they lose traction rather obviously. These tires wore evenly. The last 10K they were a bit loud, which has happened to all tires I’ve owned. These tires are tip notch above freezing.
This is an all around well performing tire to this point. It performs well on all hardtop surfaces including concrete, black-top and chip sealed surfaces. The car handles extremely well when driving under “spirited” conditions!
I have been driving on this set of tires for 2 years and 95,000 miles and they still have between 5 and 6/32 left on them. They are rotated every 5,000 miles and balanced every 10,000-15,000 miles. I also have my car’s 4 wheel alignment done every 25,000 miles. These tires are tops for my Volvo XC90 and I have been very happy with them.
I have been buying the Yokohama Ascends since 2008 for a variety of cars. This set is on my 2012 Malibu and I’m replacing them although I could get 10,000 more miles on them. They are quiet even when low on tread. Good in snow, rain, hot and cold weather. The ones on my 2002 Altima I could get 70,000 miles out of. With the Malibu I do a lot of stop and go driving and some highway.
After an unexpected flat on a road trip, I replaced all four oversize (205/60 R16) Bridgestone Ecopias on our 2009 Fit Sport with these Yokohama stock size tires. The oversize tires offered a minor improvement on rough roads, particularly potholes, but also created a feeling on instability at speed unless pumped up to 40 psi or greater. I elected to return to the stock size. I note that Tire Rack does not offer the 205/50 size as an option, though they will sell it if you ask. The Yokohamas were pleasant surprise. I had less road noise than either the OEM Dunlops or the Ecopias, which is especially notable in the Fit (not a quiet car). The ride was excellent, with better damping over rough spots and less jumping around on corners. I did not notice a change in wet traction, though I did notice overzealous acceleration could squeal the front tires more easily. (A number of crosswalks in our area were repainted or resurfaced about the time I replaced the tires, and this might be the cause). This tire seems to have a Jekyll and Hyde nature: some reviewers report absolutely terrible experiences particularly with wet traction, while others (like me) are happy with the tires. I had planned to get MIchelins next time around, but the only tire available in the stock size at this particular shop far from home was a single set of the Yokohamas. They are the best tires in my experience on the second-generation Fit, so far.One tire has a small shallow bubble in the sidewall that’s been there for over a year. This car is no longer our highway cruiser, so I’m comfortable letting it ride and see what happens. I see that this particular model has been deprecated and Yokohama has introduced a replacement marked “GT”. Those are getting good reviews, so I’m considering those as my next replacement for our Fit.
If you are looking for tires that last a long long time look no further. No weird noises or uneven wear either. Very nice tires. You will not make any records pulling G’s in the corners or hitting it off the line but if you want long lasting tires. Here you go.
I bought a set of these for my main family car several years ago. They were great. They wore extremely well. I spent more than I normally would for tires because they seemed to have a great reputation. When I bought my work car, I got them for that as well. I spend most of my day on the highway and I drive (well let’s just say a bit fast). Even under the extreme torture I have put these tires through, they still didn’t let me down. My only complaint with the tires is that they do —- in the rain. They are not bad in snow and I never found myself sliding all over the road, but I also drive for the conditions. Now 3 years later and it is time to say goodbye to them.
Replaced my two front tires in February 2016. After only 54,000 highway miles (keeping up with other traffic at 75-80 mph) I’ve had to replace this tire due to structural failure. Car began pulling to the right, and became louder. Tire failed, but maintained pressure after about two weeks. A two inch piece of belt was hanging off the sidewall. Disappointed this tire did not last longer as it performed well. Keeping my tires well inflated increased my mileage by 2 or 3 mpg. I will be monitoring the remaining tire. Went with Cooper Evolution Tour as the replacement.
I purchased these tires 3 years ago to replace some really bad tires that the dealership had put on to sell the car. I wanted something that would be quiet but had decent performance. So far after 20,000-25,000 miles the tread wear is really amazing maybe 3-4/32″ wear, very even all the way across, I do keep them rotated, front to back every 7,500 miles. Wet traction is not too bad in normal light rain/misting situations. In heavier, steady rain there is a little less confidence and just a slight issue, especially during braking , with traction. Snow performance is better than I had expected especially looking at the tread design but they performed very well in about 4 inches of snow/slush mix, even at speeds of 40mph. Deeper snow is not great causing my traction control to engage, but to be fair these tires are not really designed for deeper snow and I might have accelerated just a little too hard for the conditions. Dry traction and handling are really good, ride comfort and control also very good! I would buy these tires again but possibly in the V rated version.
Pleasantly surprised by these. Great handling – especially in rain – for the price. (Have not driven them in snow, yet.)Yes, they are terribly noisy – if they are overinflated. I found this out the hard way – trial and error – but make sure your installer doesn’t go nuts when they are mounted (like mine did). A few psi either way will make a difference.
