The Pilot Super Sport is Michelin’s Max Performance Summer tire initially introduced as Original Equipment on several of the world’s most sophisticated performance vehicles, including the exclusive, limited-edition Ferrari 599 GTO, Ferrari’s fastest road car ever. Developed for drivers who care about how tire technology enhances their vehicle’s performance and safety, Pilot Super Sport tires expand the Max Performance Summer tire performance envelope by delivering durability, handling and traction while increasing tread life.

Building on the development of racing tires designed to carry Prototype and GT class cars to endurance race victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring and Road Atlanta’s Petit Lemans, Pilot Super Sport tires are designed to deliver consistent performance and longevity by blending Max Performance driving characteristics with extended tread wear.

While the importance of tire treadwear in endurance racing may not be immediately apparent, Michelin tires set records during the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2010. One of the 2010 LMP Class leaders completed 46 consecutive laps on one set of tires with an average pace just 1% off of the pole position qualifying time. That’s almost 400 racing miles on one set of tires at an average speed of 150 mph.

Additionally the overall winner used just 11 sets of tires to cover a record 3,362 miles, averaging nearly 140 mph and almost 300 racing miles per set of tires. That represented almost a 25% wear improvement compared to just one year earlier where the overall winner needed 14 sets of tires to cover 3,235 miles. By developing longer wearing racing tires without sacrificing performance, Michelin tires allowed the teams to run record race paces while converting some of the time previously spent changing tires in the pits into productive time covering more miles on the track.

While Pilot Super Sport tires are designed to allow sports cars, sporty coupes, performance sedans and supercars to achieve their full potential in dry and wet conditions, like all summer tires they are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The Pilot Super Sport features an asymmetric design molded of Michelin’s Bi-Compound tread rubber featuring a Le Mans-inspired dry compound outboard side-by-side with their latest generation of wet compound inboard. The low-void outboard shoulder features a track-type compound to withstand the stresses of high performance cornering while the notched center ribs and inboard shoulder feature a compound designed for superior performance at very high speeds and in wet conditions.

The tire’s internal structure features twin steel belts reinforced by spirally wound Twaron cord. Twaron is a polyamide cord that offers a lightweight, high-strength reinforcement above the steel belts to enhance high-speed handling, wear and durability. Michelin FAZ Technology (Filament At Zero degrees) winds the Twaron cord around the tire circumference much the same way fishing line is wound onto fishing reels to allow Michelin engineers to tune tension and strength. The Pilot Super Sport features a polyester casing to promote a comfortable ride and responsive handling.

Pilot Super Sport tires are comparatively light, with weight savings of up to 10% compared to other tires of similar dimensions. This reduces unsprung weight to improve handling.

Limited sizes of the Michelin Pilot Super Sport are available with Michelin Acoustic Technology, which involves the manufacturer adhering a layer of sound-absorbing foam to the inner liner of the tire to reduce cabin noise in the vehicle. These sizes are identified on the Specs page and in the search results

  1. 2017 Corvette Z51 ¿ Still on the original set of tires at 10,000 miles. The fronts are wearing quicker than the rear set which I guess shows I would rather push a corner than drag race. (Front tires 5/32” on inside grove and 6/32” on outside) I would guess I have at best 5,000 more miles but to the point I will not drive in the rain if I can help it. When they had 6K miles drove across the state (Florida) in a driving rain storm and had no issues at all. My only question for others is how the heck are you getting the mileage some are claiming? The next set of tires will be another set of these. Thought about the AS 3+ ZP’s but fear giving up too much dry traction.

  2. I bought these to replace very old Goodyear Eagle F1’s. These are my first ever set of Michelins. The Goodyear’s are all-season, these are summer only. They do seem softer and more compliant in general. The ride feels smoother and less jarring over bumps. The cornering is fantastic. They have great grip in the corners and when launching. I do not drive in the rain so I cannot comment on wet conditions. Also, as these are strictly a summer compound I do not drive this car in the winter. As for higher speeds, they are also great. As smooth as glass. I am very glad I got these.

  3. Very good tire, sticks to the road like glue, can be a little noisy depending on the road surface. top notch responsiveness. Just replaced the original fronts with 2 identical Michelin Pilot Super Sport ZP tires after 39,000 miles. Except for a little noise, I could not be happier with these Michelin tires. Still have the original rear tires on the car….I estimate they should last another 10,000 to 20,000 miles.

  4. Replaced the OEM Goodyear F1 tires that came on the car from the factory when the car had 9,000 Miles on it. Didn’t like the harsh ride of the OEM tires and the car had a tendency to wander or follow ruts and grooves in the road. The Michelins were a big improvement. The only downside I have seen so far isn’t really a problem since they come with a warning that these are summer tires and not recommended for driving in cold temperatures. I took the car out in late fall when it should have already been in winter storage and scared myself. If you drive your performance car year round I would advise getting the A/S tires instead.

  5. Tires are OK but a already have a flat. I only have 11000 mi on them. I thought tires were not supposed th get flats until the tread got low. Other than that I haven’t had any problems with them. I don’t push the tires to the limit because I don’t track the car.I can’t tell you about the ride quality because my car is runing on sport mode.

  6. Great tire.Previous set were ps zp.This tire is 10x better, don’t think twice on buying. As always Tire Rack ROCKS!

  7. When New they were quiet. Now they are almost as noisey as the GoodYears on my 2010 GS. If they would add 3 or 4/32nds to the tread depth it would be a outstanding summer tire. To me, it makes no sense to be caught in a medium rain shower and have to slow to 50mph to stay on the road, which is a direct result of lack of tread depth even when brand new. The alignment is set up for street/highway driving so tire wear is even across all tires. I will try Continental tires next. Bottom line, If you enjoy travelling uninterrupted by a medium rain shower, these are NOT the replacement tires for you.
